Continuing Professional Development (CPD) is a lifelong process of maintaining and developing professional competence, creativity and innovation, with the aim of ensuring your skills and knowledge are up to date. CPD has value for both the individual and their profession.

• CFO (SA) - 20 Verifiable, 20 non-verifiable
• CBA (SA) - 15 Verifiable, 15 non-verifiable
• BAP (SA) - 25 Verifiable, 15 non-verifiable
• BA (SA) - 10 Verifiable, 10 non-verifiable

• Verifiable

A unit will be verifiable if the learning activity provides or includes the following:

• Course outlines and teaching materials provided;
• Attendance record, registration forms or confirmation of registration from provider;
• Independent assessments that a learning activity occurred;
• Confirmation by an instructor, mentor or tutor of participation
• Confirmation by an employer of participation in an in-house program
• Confirmation by an employer of participation in an in-house program

Non-verifiable - A unit will be non-verifiable if the member is unable to prove that the CPD learning activity has taken place. Examples of non-verifiable learning activities include the reading of daily financial and business newspapers and journals, for example, Business Day, Finweek, etc

CPD packages, catering to your specific needs, can be found at www.saiba.academy. The platform streamlines CIBA’s reporting regarding CPD to regulators in the most cost-effective way.

1. Why the price increase for 2021?
   • We need to ensure that we continue to attract members of high quality and competence. If our fees are lower than competitors, we may not be able to achieve this. We have seen an increase in the number of complaints against members and this presents a cost and a risk to CIBA as an organisation, the CIBA brand and the ability of our members in good standing to maintain their livelihoods.
   • We have not increased fees for the last three years with the aim of assisting members economically and during Lockdown.
   • We represent 9000 members with diverse career goals and needs and must ensure broad based member satisfaction.
   • The large majority of members require that CPD be included in their membership fees. Not everyone can afford buying additional CPD on top of their membership fees.
   • As members become more successful and grow their firms the demand for support from CIBA increases.
   • CIBA has membership obligations with IFAC, PAFA, SARS, CIPC, and SAQA. This creates additional compliance burdens and costs.
   • We are expanding our marketing efforts to ensure SMEs and Government are better informed about CIBA members with the aim of ensuring more client referrals.
2. Does CIBA offer payment arrangements?
   • Yes. Membership fees can be paid in monthly installments from as little as R221 pm- depending on your designation.
3. Do early bird discounts apply?
   • Yes. Members that pay their fees in full before 31 May 2021 receive a 10% discount. In this way we assist with reducing the overall cost and impact of the increase.
4. Why is CPD and support added to the membership fees?
   • We represent 9000 members and now include core CPD events in the membership fees. In this way we can ensure that all members adhere to the same minimum standard. Not all members can afford the additional extended CPD offered by the CIBA Academy. As members become more established in their careers or firms, they can afford the comprehensive CPD offered within the CIBA Academy.
   • Due to the revelations at the Zondo commission the role of professional bodies and accountants are under scrutiny. We need to ensure we avoid a KPMG, ESKOM, VBS Bank, etc scandal by ensuring our members perform quality and ethical work. This requires appointment of technical support staff and other technical support tools.
5. When will the price increase be effective from?
   • The price increase will be effective from 1 July 2021.*Invoices have however been issued and sent already with Early Bird Discount for those members who settle their fees in advance.
6. If I have subscribed with another CPD provider, can I be billed without CPD?
   • No. The content of our core CPD was compiled in response to specific risk areas identified by our Disciplinary Committee. We experienced increased complaints from the public and regulators about member conduct and were forced to include core CPD topics as part of the membership fees.
   • In consultation with our Legal team the CPD content was structured with the aim of addressing these complaints and concerns in order to ensure that our members have the required knowledge and awareness of the environment in which they operate in and is able to provide quality services to their clients/employers whilst limiting costs of potential future complaints, investigations and disciplinary costs.
7. Can support be added as a stand-alone add on?
   • No. The need for support was apparent in the recent membership survey conducted. We have carefully considered the needs of our members as a whole and have decided to include the support (and CPD) as part of the mandatory add-ons in order to ensure that we increase the level of support provided to our members.
8. What support is provided to our commerce-based designations e.g., BA(SA), CBA(SA) and Cert.Fin.Officer(SA)?
   • Career development and guidance by way of free mentorship and coaching.
   • Engagements with employment agencies to ensure career advancement and recognition of the three commerce-based designations.
   • As a CBA(SA) or Cert.Fin.Officer(SA) you can obtain the BAP(SA) designation at a 50% discount which enables you to start a part time practice or out-sourced CFO business.
   • Specific executive education programmes for financial managers and financial directors/CFOs.
9. If I only want CPD and not support, do I have the option?
   • The need for both support and CPD was apparent in the recent membership survey conducted. We have carefully considered the needs of our members as a whole and have decided to include the support and CPD as part of the mandatory add-ons in order to ensure that we increase the level of support provided to our members.
10. If I do CPD with CIBA Academy, what will happen to that subscription?
    • Only core CPD is included in your membership fees. This consist of the following topics: Ethics, Quality management, Professional engagement standards, Annual Accounting Update 2020/2021, Legislation Update Part 1, Legislation Update Part 2
    • Your CPD subscription with CIBA Academy provides additional and more comprehensive topics that is required if you want to supercharge your accounting firm and become serious about making money.
11. What does the Support entail?
    • IFAC, PAFA, SARS RCB, CIPC compliance and/or membership,
    • Tax and accounting technical support,
    • Professional indemnity,
    • CPD,
    • Practice support,
    • Mentoring and coaching,
    • Member network events and platforms,

12. Why do members in Namibia pay more for CPD?
    • As a controlling body of accountants in Namibia, CIBA is required and have been requested by members to assist them with maintaining Namibian specific CPD. CPD presenters in Namibia are very expensive with costs 3x that of comparable presenters in South Africa. By making CPD mandatory we can reduce costs through bulk purchases and present better value at a relatively small monthly amount. This is to ensure that CIBA members can continue to operate in Namibia and provide smart and accurate advice to their clients. Members have asked that we offer a package of CPD topics that they can attend monthly from their homes or offices. This reduces travel due to Covid-19 and saves a lot of time. A comprehensive CPD package has now been included for all designated Namibian members as part of their membership fees as requested in the 2020 Membership survey.
